Traditionally, weaving was an important cultural practice for the Aboriginal communities on the East Coast of Australia. In 2009, the Boolarng Nangamai Aboriginal Arts and Culture Studio artists from the South Coast of NSW conducted weaving workshops in eight Aboriginal communities on the Mid North Coast with the aim of reviving this cultural practice.

The workshops were attended by over 90 participants who were taught about appropriate fibres for weaving and weaving techniques. Most participants weaved a sculptural fish, which was collectively exhibited as a large regional work.

The fish that were made during the workshop series were exhibited in NSW Parliament House as part of the Mid North Coast Food and Wine Showcase organised through Mid North Coast Tourism in partnership with Industry & Investment NSW and at the 2010 Saltwater Freshwater Festival.

Due to the popularity of the weaving workshops, a series of weaving master-classes were held in 2010 to train weaving teachers, so that this important cultural practice can be taught at local schools and festivals throughout the Mid North Coast.
