Recording the Traditional stories of the region’s Aboriginal communities is imperative to cultural sustainability. With 52% of the region’s Aboriginal population under the age of 19 and only 8% over 55, there is a danger that the stories could be lost. There is a need to preserve traditional knowledge in the Mid North Coast.
Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin MP, has just announced funding to support the recording of Aboriginal legends and dreamtime stories to be launched at the 2012 Saltwater Freshwater Festival. We will be working closely with our Local Aboriginal Land Councils on this project so please contact them if you would like to be involved in this project.
